- At the beginning of December 2003 the Austrian National Library (ANL) presented a final report about illegally acquired objects during the Hitler time according to the "Kunstrückgabegesetz 1998" (law concerning the return of looted art (FLB. 181/1998). Before the report could be written, a careful, thorough and intensive investigation among all objects which could fall into the above mentioned category had to be finished. About 150,000 prints and a few thousand other objects from the collection of the house had to be checked and information about prior owners collected. After having finished research in relevant records in the National Library, the Austrian State Archive, the Viennese City- and State Library and other institutions it was possible to document the practice of looting as well as to clarify the fate of at least a few of the victims. The report submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, which was dealt with by a special Advisory Group, contains 38,210 collected objects and 14,193 prints. According to the Kunstrückgabegesetz, all these items are dubious acquisitions of the ANL. The ANL took on the quite difficult challenge of searching for the heirs, a search which has been going on with the very energetic support of the Jewish Community of Vienna and the National Fund of the Republic of Austria – tremendous research efforts have gone into attempts to find heirs worldwide. So far 35,215 objects have been restored to their lawful owners. In addition 8,363 books have been transferred to the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism for monetary conversion according to the specifications of the Art Restitution Law in June 2010.
