- In 2002, when the dubious provenance of some library holdings acquired during the National Socialist Regime was first discussed in the media, the registers of acquisitions for the years 1933 to 1945 of the Main Library were searched for suspicious entries. Additionally, in the course of a project started in 2008, all the books acquired between 1933 and 1950 are being examined physically for stamps and other indicators of provenance. Thanks to the almost complete documentation provided by the registers of acquisitions, the history of the holdings of the Main Library can be traced relatively easily. Unfortunately, no comparable records were kept for the libraries of the various institutes of the University of Innsbruck, which became part of the University Library only in 1975. Due to the lack of source materials, research on these holdings is far more difficult.
