- Scientific publishing has been influenced by new communication and information technologies as, for example, the electronic publishing. The scientific information cycle has been modified by on-line self-archiving, adding functionalities such as hypertextuality, hypermetiation and multimedia, making the communication process more dynamic. The Internet evolution and the open source software are allowing a more comprehensive distribution of electronic journals contents, and they are creating new form of bibliographic control among institutional publications that use interoperability systems such as the Open Archives Protocol Initiative. Some of the benefits using OAI-PMH are: faster scientific information dissemination, overcoming obsolescence, increasing the impact of research results and reduction of production costs. This paper presents the changes produced by the open access publications on the scientific communication, and the possibilities of new production and research environments within interoperability information resources.
