- Wishes and realities - library data and library catalogues : five theses. The article discusses the discrepancies between the data created by German libraries and its use in library catalogues. Five theses are presented and illustrated: 1. Known-item searches go wrong much too often. 2. The rate of subject indexing is far too low and must be improved (e.g. by pooling of data beyond the regional union catalogues). 3. A huge part of the metadata produced are used not at all or not enough in our catalogues. 4. Browsing and discovery must be supported better in library catalogues. 5. Library catalogues must be advanced in a coordinated and cooperative way.
