- In 2008, Reference and User Services Association (RUSA) of the American Library Association (ALA) adopted a new definition of reference in keeping with the incorporation of the information and communication technologies in the reference service. Some libraries have adapted to changes incorporating technology into their services, considering the new behaviors of their users from finding information, developing virtual reference services, etc.. In Britain and North America, discussed and published about how to tailor services to the pace and in that direction.and today reference librarians debate about the future of reference service in a changing context. From the analysis of recent literature, two opposite trends are emerging. On one side are those who predict the demise of the service created in the traditional way, a desk reference or sector with large collections and a reference librarian answering, in various ways, the user queries. On the other hand, some authors suggest the need for a "renaissance" of the service. For these lines of thought circulating current trends: information literacy, distance education, consortia of reference, reference service mobility, technology education as a pillar of education for librarianship, service customization, user training and repositories. Based on the prevailing situation in the international community we have decided to hold an exploratory study to know the reality of university libraries at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Thus, we were analyzed by means of an indirect study the presence of the Reference Service in the web pages of the libraries of the University of Buenos Aires. In a first step to analyze, the criteria were: existence of the service, terminology used to name it, staff in charge: the presence, position, identification of the person, and numbers of services covered. From this study raises questions about the future of reference services for libraries of the UBA.
