- This study focuses on catalogues of books and engravings compiled by Spanish booksellers, printers and publishers. Sale catalogues provide information about the offerings, the circulation network, and the sale of books and engravings. We analyse examples of the sale of engravings as: part of the sales strategy used in catalogues of printed items; the strategies of booksellers who advertised engravings alongside books from their shops; and catalogues that promoted “fine” engravings and sought a more exclusive clientele with greater purchasing power. Finally, we examine the circulation of engravings in trade networks and particularly their distribution to America and their use in the Viceroyalties of the Spanish Crown during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
