  • Digital repositories of higher education institutions are known as institutional repositories. The importance of institutional repositories is to give visibility to the production of these academic institutions, aiming to preserve, disseminate, store, retrieve and facilitate access to different document types such as theses, papers, presentations, videos, lectures, music, photos and other. The aim of this study was to examine how the repositories do their running policies. We selected 69 stores from June to August 2010 using the method of direct observation OPEN DOR and in the ROAR. The policies analyzed were content policy, access, preservation, metadata and submission / self-archiving. After the analysis it can be concluded that the political content is the most frequently appearing in 69 repositories, preservation policy in 52, the policy of submission and self-archiving to 52, in the access policy 50, policy and metadata appears in 41 repositórios. The analyzed policies were the policies of content, access, preservation, metadata and submission/self-archiving. The results showed that in content’s policy, the repositories specify what types of documents were accepted and which formats can be used. In the metadata’s policy were specified which must be completed and how that can be used. In the policies of preservation, repositories explained what measures were taken for long time preservation. In the policy of submission and self-archiving the repositories were concerned about the rights of the author, using the copyright, creative commons license and who is responsible for submission.
