- Widgets, among other new channels of communications, are included under the concept of web 2.0. Desktop widgets, also known as desktop gadgets, are mini applications designed to offer information in a predominantly visual environment, which could be downloaded by users for its integration in their web pages, blogs, social networks, personalized desktops and others. The National Library of Health Sciences (Biblioteca Nacional de Ciencias de la Salud, BNCS) in cooperation with the Computer Support Department of Carlos III Health Institute, has developed a series of widgets whose main goal is to get the user closer to different search and information retrieval tools developed by the library. This initiative strengthens the open space concept to which information services are evolving to. These newly created widgets have a double functionality: 1.- To provide search functions from personalized desktops developed by BNCS in Netvibes, where widgets of interest for the community of users are located. 2.- To allow the user to choose and download those widgets to integrate them in their home pages, blogs, customized desktops, etc. The common characteristics of these widgets are their customization properties, the integration of content and the free distribution through Internet. The involved processes are detailed in the poster: a viability study, source selection, technical design, prototype creation, tests in different desktops, description, implementation, dissemination and a later usability study.
