  • Digital content: the hidden revolution...Despite what seems to be an easy and automated world, one free of the traditional obligations, digital contents include a level of complexity which is rarely made explicit. It is a new universe where potentially everything is connected to everything else, and everybody relies on everybody else. It is vital to understand these connections in their entirety, to be aware of all their implications and consequences, both from the individual-citizen-consumer perspective and from the viewpoint of the issuer or creator of the contents and, beyond that, the documentalist. This could start with access to contents which are growing exponentially and indiscriminately, the problems associated with their perpetuity, the hugely powerful analysis algorithms and the current “quasi” unlimited capacity for storage and processing, the influence on people, the legal implications, etc. Digital contents have ceased to be information “islands" and have become a polyhedral system where the different facets exercise their influence and demand their specifications, which it is necessary to deal with and manage in a holistic manner. Although, looked at closely, the majority of these specifications already have a "traditional" precedent, they are not comparable with previous experiences due to their volumes, their immediacy, their multiplying effects or their globalisation. In this sense, a multidisciplinary vision is required, one which in addition to complying with the different requirements that may be demanded, is also capable of responding at all times to the needs and demands of people and organisations.
