  • This paper discusses the discrepancies identified in the Community Library (BCo) of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) concerning the deposit of intellectual production of theses and dissertations of the institution. It is understood that the library should serve as a forum repository of institutional production of documents produced and saved. The identified problem comes from the following assumptions: [1] lack of institutional policy that supported for the deposit of theses and dissertations at UFSCar and [2] procedure for registration of patents from invention or new process, which requires that the deposit is postponed on the need to keep secret the methodology or the search result. This study is justified by the fact that academic research generates knowledge explained in the form of articles, dissertations and theses. With the emergence of new research in the institution itself or external, the need for other researchers to have access to knowledge previously generated becomes patent. It is understood that this is the main justification for the development of this research: the need for the HCB ownership of the role of depository institutions at UFSCar. As a general objective is intended to analyze the discrepancy between the theses and dissertations at the University UFSCar and deposit them on the HCB to be possible [1] contribute to the establishment of a policy that the deposit institution in these works, [2] ensure the dissemination of scientific knowledge, [3] increase the visibility of the library facing the academic and scientific community and [4] provide institutional knowledge generated in order to facilitate access to documentary records.
