- The extension activity Itinerant Soiree: collective practices of eco-readings, developed in the neighborhood Romeo Tortorelli, part of the project with the same name and involves two other neighborhoods in the city of Sao Carlos / SP: Douradinho and Vila Isabel. This project is part of the University Extension Program PROEXT Culture, Ministry of Culture and Education. The motivation for conducting this project was the desire to resume the practice of literary evenings, characterized by the spoken word from the written word and the discussion of everyday life portrayed in literature. The Environment theme emerged from the need for change in attitude given the world reality inherent in this issue, and the option of making the activity in the house of community members, was the fact that 86% of readers of books actually read the book at home (research data Portraits of Reading in Brazil, held in 2008 and available in http://www.prolivro.org.br). The option of conducting the activities in these districts was motivated by the lack of public libraries. The development activities is the responsibility of teachers and students the DCI and the DL and cultural selected residents from each of the neighborhoods. Objectives: Main objective: to revive the reading habit to promote collective household integration between community knowledge and scientific knowledge, in order to develop reading skills, encourage critical thinking in everyday actions involving environmental issues in the neighborhood Romeo Tortorelli. Methodology: It is based on weekly meetings to prepare the activity, the selection of households, the disclosure of activity by the district, in welcoming the members (with explanation of the purpose of the meeting that day), and in that activity. For the realization there is a selection of books focusing on environmental issues, the preparation of storytelling and stimulate the participation of those present. The record of the meetings is done by means of textual annotations, images, videos, drawings and more. Finally, there is a loan of literary material and the closure of the completion of the activity. Results: Interest in thematic discussions involving the environment, proposed to the everyday life and improvement of living conditions, environmental, health and living in community, increasing the level of reading comprehension of texts and the quality of discussions; interest in actions that allow the creation of libraries; awareness about the importance of critical thinking, fostering relations of exchange between the scientific and technical knowledge and expertise and popular community. Conclusion: Actions in support of reading incentives contributed to the formation of this habit with the residents of the neighborhood. The goals have been achieved, such as awakening the pleasure of reading, group discussion of texts, exchange of knowledge on environmental issues. We can see the appreciation of the initiative by the residents.
