- The indexing languages are figured as thesaurus, controlled vocabularies and heading lists used as mechanisms of review and evaluation of indexing. They are important instruments of mediation and compatibility of language of an information unit with the language of documentary contents, during the indexing activity, and the languages of the users during the access and information retrieval through a searching interface of library catalogues or data bases. The choice and use of indexing languages by libraries, archives and information systems are liable to an indexing policy that reflects the interests and aims of an information unit and contemplates a way of carrying out the indexing activity. With the aim of searching on the indexing languages used by National Libraries and National Archives, as well as some information systems in Latin America, it was carried out an exploratory and descriptive diagnosis with field research, from October 2008 to June 2009, in visits to 24 instituitions in 9 countries of Latin America through interviews with the manager and the indexer of each instituition to get information on the functioning and indexing procedures. The collected data show that National Libraries use several indexing languages, but the most used is Lista de Encabezamientos de Materia para Bibliotecas (LEMB), published by Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango , from Colombia, and among the archives the use of indexing language does not exist. 1 Introdução
