- In the present university environment, with the establishment of an educational system based on the Bologna principles and centred on competence-based learning, our paper deals with one of the most complex aspects in the training process: assessment. We analyse the concept of competence and its elements, as well as the different stages involved in the assessment process. The final aim of assessment is no longer to determine students’ mastery of a specific subject, but essentially to establish the extent to which they have acquired a specific competence. In this context, we present a tool designed to aid the assessment of competence achievement: an assessment matrix, in which we gradually and hierarchically establish several degrees of competence mastery and the corresponding equivalences in the grading system used in our university system. We apply the matrix to the Bachelor’s Degree in Information and Documentation, one of the degrees which have been adapted to the European Higher Education Area and taught from the academic year 2008-2009 onwards.
