- In 2003, the Vienna Central Public Library moved to its new building at the Urban-Loritz-Platz. Since than Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been used in order to process, charge, and secure media items. The RFID-system consists of 300.000 tags, more than two dozens of reading machines, and a software connection to other systems. The librarians process new books which contain an RFID-tag into the catalogue. The readers charge the books at open access charging systems. Security gates at the entrances and exits avoid that non-charged media items are stolen. As a result, the use of RFID has led to cost savings and increases in efficiency at the Vienna Central Public Library.
