- This paper describes the situation of prison libraries in Austria and is based on a master's thesis. The first part of this paper deals with the history of prison libraries. Concerning the type of library, the question of free access to literature, as stated in the basic right of freedom of information, is one of the central issues. In this regard, legal aspects and the international IFLA guidelines for prison libraries are important references. One of the key findings of this paper is the comparison between public and prison libraries because, the latter are aligned to public libraries. The relevant IFLA guidelines are partly applied in Austria.
