- All through the long existence of university libraries, the main ideas concerning their concept and function have evolved along with the changes in the Universities where they were found. In this sense, the present paper offers a brief historical review, goes over the main national and international guidelines, standards or principles assessing the programmes and services offered by university libraries, and ends up by tackling the concept of CRAI and the new definition of university library in Spain.
