Daftar Isi:
- Information is the currency of democracy and an informed citizenry is the bulwark of a democracy (Jefferson). Creating an informed citizenry is only possible through freedom of information. Free and equitable access to information consists of systems usch as the Internet that became an indispensable part of our lives. Yet, regulations introduced in Turkey to control the Internet moves Turkey to the class of countries labeled as "the enemy of the Internet". Access to hundreds of web sites (including YouTube since May 2008) are banned for trivial reasons. Individuals whose access to information are banned with such restrictions cannot fully and effectively participate in modern democratic societies. The bulwark of a democracy cannot be strengthened by creating a subclass who is made up of "digital fossils" unaware of what is going on in the world. This paper deals with freedom of information in the digital age and discusses the impact of censorship.
