- It is presently essential to achieve a suitable layout and design of library buildings in order to successfully meet the learning goals defined by the European Space of Higher Education (ESHE). From such a starting point, the present paper renders a full review of the various spaces implied in library design and their internal relationships, as well as of their environmental and safety conditions both for persons and collections. The characteristics of furniture and equipment are also assessed in the light of different guidelines, present tendencies, standards and real instances of every point dealt with. Our work concludes with a reference to the preservation policies and models of bibliographic materials.
