- New technologies allow the proliferation of documents in digital environments. The adoption of strategies for digital preservation is important in this new context, so that both the media and the content of the documents can be preserved for the access of the future generations. At the present moment, the university library must accompany the development of technologies that can provide better resources for the activities of teaching, research and extension. It presents a review of literature on digital preservation, discusses methods used in this process, types of media (magnetic and optical) and physical conditions of preservation of some media. This paper concluded that digital preservation is a recent field of research and development, dedicated to the definition of physical, logical and intellectual preservation policies. The study proposes in future new studies that address the physical preservation of today’s media.
