- The goal of this article is to describe library and cultural activities of the Main Public Library of Vienna (Hauptbücherei Wien Am Gürtel). The author presents various forms of information and cultural services offered to different groups of users of the public library network in Vienna and on this base formulates conclusions regarding library policy in multinational states. Modern library architecture, information technology and organizational culture accepting the participation of various groups of users representing various national characteristics, define conditions for the mission of social cohesion undertaken by libraries in the European Union.
