- The current international movements (the Open Archives Initiative/OAI and the Open Access Movement/ OA) changed substantially the way to produce, measure, share, disseminate and manage the scientific production conveyed by journals, and consequently, the way the scientific community is producing science. Aiming at bringing some clarification to an area that is still under construction, this study tried to identify in the realm of the Brazilian scientific community in the area of the communication science the main motivational factors to publish papers on and to retrieve information from papers and scientific journals, both in printed and electronic media, both from open source or restricted, both in portals of periodicals or in digital repositories. Thus, in accordance with the dimensions quoted in motivational theoretical basis, the following variables were defined for study: (1) factors of motivation to write / publish papers in scientific journals, (2) factors of difficulties to write / publish articles in scientific journals. Also, the participants perception about quality criteria of scientific journals and difficulty to read/consult scientific journals, were also studied.
