  • Referencing by means of bibliographies or footnotes has a long tradition in scholarly communication. The hypertext structure of the World Wide Web has accelerated the relation between the citing publication and the referenced work. On the basis of citation indexing, the cited references can act as a starting point when searching information or relevant scholarly communities. Recently, the mere counting of quantities of publications or citations in order to gain a good image seems to get more and more relevant.
