- Digital libraries are very complex systems that integrate a range of services for capturing, cataloguing, storing, searching, retrieval, preservation and management of digital information. Each one of the different conceptions of digital libraries adopts a different architecture and model. This paper discusses the basics concepts and principles involved in design and architecture of digital libraries, while proposes a generic architecture for them. From this generic architecture a list of research topics is extracted. These research topics are intended to cover the main issues of digital library area.
