  • Since its participation in the Committee of Libraries of the Laín Entralgo Agency in 2003, the library of the Virgen de la Torre Hospital has had access to a large amount of full text electronic journals and databases. Since then, significant changes have been produced in an institution that due to its size previously had limited bibliographical resources, specially in the Document Delivery Service (SOD). Methodology: A longitudinal study between 2003 and 2006 was carried out, to analyze the changes happened in SOD after its inclusion in the Virtual Library. Results: A growth in the number of petitions has been observed. Handling the SOD through the Virtual Library, has transformed the classical paper-based behaviour of the users, that begun to use e-journals. This has invigorated the SOD, that became an essential service for the users. Conclusions: The Document Delivery Service has a significant value added thanks to the cooperative structure of the Committee of Libraries of the Laín Entralgo Agency. It has increased the speed in the management and reception of articles, and the users are more motivated for searching information. This results directly in its vocational training and in the attainment of the objectives of the institution. The library professionals should adapt to these changes, trusting on the Consortia Libraries as a new form of management of the hospital libraries.
