- ISBD standard regards as optional, even though recommended, the GMD (General Material Designation). GMD indicates, at the beginning of description and in general terms, the class of material to which the documents belongs. GMD declares the kind of documents, informs that the document is an electronic resource rather that audiovisual material in order to allow the selection of the document. GMD highlights the structural consistency of a catalog describing documents in different formats, and reduce their distinction to a small number of classes. Its function is to allow the distinction of materials on different formats, with a search or browsing of the catalog.
