  • Thesauri, with the thoroughness of the description of the terms included in them, facilitate the subject organization of information and increase the precision and the recall rate of the research at the information seeking process of information systems. A thesaurus of Greek terms, beyond the narrow limits of use for which it is intended, constitutes a powerful conceptual tool of Greek language, in which few efforts have been realized up to now. In the present paper, the administrative context and the work carried out for the compilation of a Greek thesaurus are described, in the frame of the Consortium of Greek Academic Libraries. The thesaurus, in its pilot phase, covers the needs of the Library of Panteios University, with the prospect to cover the collections of all academic libraries -members of the Consortium. The subjects that already have been processed are those of international relations, sociology, economics, regional growth and psychology as well as of institutional framework, production, industry, trade and labour. In the paper, the problems arisen during the localization and the choice of terms, which have been established within the individual scientific fields, are analyzed. The difficulties of conceptual classification of each term are reported, with the search and indication of the hierarchy in which it belongs, so that the equivalent, hierarchical and related relations between the terms will be developed. At the growth and conceptual connection of the terms, international thesauri are consulted such as those of OECD and UNESCO, as well as specialized thematic thesauri and catalogues. The standard 1321 of ELOT which refers to the creation of monolingual thesauri constituted the working base of the thesaurus committee. Moreover, for all the Greek terms, the corresponding English terms are also cited, as they have been established in related thesauri, according to the guidelines of the 5964 standard of ISO, in order to facilitate the users who are familiar with English terminology for the information retrieval from the catalogues of Greek libraries. The proposal is accompanied by a demonstration of the automated thesaurus which was implemented with the TMS-SIS thesaurus management program, supported by the ITE research team of the University of Crete. The program was farther developed, with the contribution of the thesaurus committee, in order to satisfy the needs, as they have being determined by the corresponding standards of ELOT and ISO and the international developments on thesauri management issues.
