- This study examines and evaluates the levels of interoperability between library catalogues (OPACs) and catalogues of repositories. It presents a case study including a representative sample of Hellenic academic libraries. The first issue examined is the interoperability, i.e. the degree and effectiveness of the communication, between a library’s catalogue (OPAC) and the same library’s repository catalogue. The parameters taken into account concern the production of metadata such as: metadata formats, cataloguing rules, authority files and classification schemes. Additionally, we examine the ways and the operating systems with which metadata are handled along with the actual documents in the case of the repositories. The second issue studied is the scale of interoperability not only in the context of the same institution but among different institutions as well. In this section we attempt a comparative analysis of the results of our research. Our aim is the evaluation of catalogues in terms of both the current potential of communication and interoperability among the academic libraries and the prospect of supporting services of added value based on the repositories. Interoperability is evaluated both in terms of the metadata operating systems and semantically. Semantic interoperability plays an important role being the determining element of the final contact with the user. Actually, it constitutes the factor that will judge the overall success or failure of the communication. Nevertheless, interoperability –both structural and syntactic– could easily turn out useless if not associated to the required level of semantic interoperability. Our research method is the use of questionnaires together with access to the catalogues in question.
