  • Although discussions on Information mediation in the scope of Information Science (IS) are recognized as necessary, they are still carried out in a very early stage. Therefore, information and reading mediation is defined, based on reflections and results obtained firstly from research projects and subprojects of the Group "Interfaces: informação e conhecimento" (Interfaces: information and knowledge) – and secondly by presenting the authors' understanding of reading. It is analyzed the importance of information and reading to the Information Science as well as for the information professionals’ qualification, favoring reading as one of the most important aspects for the professionals’ performance. This work also focuses on the act of reading and the importance of sharing this reading. The authors state that the information environments do not privilege the interaction and the relationship among readers, hindering a possible and desirable "invisible school" among users of these places.
