- This paper presents the results of a project researching libraries located in Athens – mostly academic – with the intention to evaluate the level of serials management automation. The project was the theme of a dissertation done under the supervision of The Department of Library and Information Systems, Athens Technological Educational Institute (Τ.Ε.Ι.) and was conducted between February and September 2006. The level of usage of various Library Information Management Systems was regarded as an indicator of assessing the investment, which was made for the selection and application of the systems within library settings. Among the library works supported by the systems, serials management was selected due to the complicated nature of serial publications, which require many special applications. This approach neither intended to evaluate nor to compare the characteristics of various systems used by the libraries, but to estimate the level of usage eventually succeeded. It was also intended to identify the factors that affected the progress of applications, as seen by libraries personnel.
