- The demands of contemporary library users are growing in close relation to the development of information technologies and general progress in technology itself. Each modern library, including an academic one, has to keep up with this progress in close cooperation with its users. The authors describe the needs and expectations of academic library users in the context of the role of such libraries in educational processes. The influence of new technologies such as electronic communication, distance access, digital collections on the quality of library services is discussed. The stress is laid on the role of instruction and training on effective use of modern sources of information as well as on the role of professional librarians in organizing (in cooperation with library users) professional, integrated services. Furthermore, the attention is drawn to partner communication with information users within the frame of modern library and information services.
