  • The main index/retrieval tool for records of physical objects inside a library is the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC). Until now, the services that OPAC catalogues offer are item retrieval, availability status and loan services. The new generation OPAC, exploits the new Web 2.0 technologies (Web 2.0 refers to a second/new generation of Internet services) such as social networking sites, blogs, wikis, and various collaboration and annotation tools which emphasize on the user’s collaboration. The Library of Panteion University has developed a new social catalogue (OPACIAL) which has been enriched with Web 2.0 technologies (http://library.panteion.gr/opacial). Apart from these new features, this new catalogue can retrieve similar records from the digital library by exploiting the unified subject headings policy set by the library in all its resources. Moreover, OPACIAL can better display the records using various views (brief, full) and by using a better information abstraction schema. It can create a faceted browsing index using subject headings, display the record in XML, BibTex formats, export the record to various external social networking sites, etc.
