  • This paper reports on quantitative and qualitative aspects of the presence of Dewey numbers in the Austrian Union Catalogue. Although the active use of the DDC in Austria is limited to a few libraries the use of records from external resource databases has brought a considerable number of DDC notations into the catalogue, formerly mostly from the British National Bibliography and in the last two years also from the German National Library. As the latter supplies the Dewey numbers in a different MAB category ("analytic DDC") it was necessary to implement a fix program that automatically merges the two data fields. In order to improve data quality also a number of corrections was needed; the majority were accomplished with the support of automated tools. Now the DDC numbers will also be displayed and made available for navigation in the Austrian Library Network's OPAC. This includes for any given Dewey number the display of the class names (in German) of the first three levels in the hierarchy so that users may get an impression of the topical surrounding of the respective codes.
