- Rapid development of information technology contributes to the process of metamorphosis of worldwide scientific communication. Renowned academic institutions not only collect data on their researchers’ intellectual output but are increasingly implementing institutional-based repositories. It is institutional repository that preserves digital content and makes it accessible to academic community. The paper presents formative stages of setting up an institutional repository and its subsequent management policies. This work was based on individual research project (a survey conducted at Adam Mickiewicz University) as well as the experiences gathered from a number of foreign libraries. The importance of an efficient cooperation between academic community and librarians as the key factor is emphasized.
