- The creation of the physical Hellenic Academic Libraries Union Catalogue (HALUC) is both a great technical challenge and an opportunity to qualitatively upgrade the services offered by the Academic Libraries. The qualitative upgrade consists in unifying the online catalogues and creating an inter library loan system for the members of the Hellenic Academic Libraries network. The lack of homogeneity of the Greek information systems has been the greatest problem during the implementation of the physical Union Catalogue. Nevertheless the coordinated efforts of the Union Catalogue central team and the technical support company have been fruitful. The database of the Union Catalogue has now more than 30 collections among which can be found some of the biggest in data libraries (for example, those of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the University of Crete, the University of Athens, the University of Cyprus etc.). The number of database records exceeds 1.830.000 and by the project’s completion it will be over 2.000.000. The present paper aims at presenting in full detail all the necessary stages for the incorporation of a collection and the results that derive from that. In addition, it aims at showing through specific use and operation scenarios the importance of HALUC as a bibliographic information search and retrieval tool for the Greek librarian and end user.
