  • Recently the library science field has shown a heightened interest in usability and accessibility, both for evaluating existing resources as well as for the creation of new ones. There have been numerous experiences of evaluating the extent to which guidelines are being followed, for example, those of WCAG, as well as of certain user tests. The results obtained from this approach to the problem are useful but not sufficient. Usability engineering and, even more, user-centred design combine a design process with a set of techniques that are much broader than are generally known, bringing together different methods for attaining objectives. Our field must be made aware of this broad offering in order to apply, in each case, those techniques that are the most appropriate. This is all the more important now that such a large percentage of library services are offered, to an ever increasing extent, by means of computer systems.
