  • Since May 2007 the Library of the Medical University Vienna has run a project of provenance research. Its target is to register and restore books, which were stolen between 1938 and 1945 and bought by medical instituts and clinics, to their rightful owners. The article describes the motivation and emphasis of this provenance research project as well as the steps that have been set until now. At the Branch Library for the History of Medicine 23.000 books of the 170.000 existing historical titles of this library have been scrutinized. Approximatly 1.000 books are suspicous in terms that they might have been robbed or expropriated during the Nazi-regime. The description is complemented with two examples: the private library of Fernand Raoul Jellinek-Mercedes (Inv. 17.095) and the library of the Akademischer Verein jüdischer Mediziner (Inv. 9.539).
