- There are three main areas in electronic records management and preservation. First information technologies. Technology causes some problems (data integrity or media obsolescence), that researchers have been concerned to resolve. Second legal requirements, an area where regulatory acceptance of new technologies has recently reached an optimal level, leaving only outstanding the everyday acceptance of electronic records in legal procedures. And third records management and archives. In Spain, archival institutions are responsible of managing and preserving electronic records, and become who provide management methods and procedures. Since IT revolution, archival institutions are making an strong effort to adapt his methods to electronic records management, an effort that in many cases leads to success, but that sometimes leads to some corporate pessimism. The goal of this paper is to analyze current situation in Spain for each of this three areas, specially in public sector, and to identify key aspects of archives which can definitively connect them with Information Society.
