- The main challenge facing a thematic portal is to provide reliable, up-to-date information and services in a specific area of knowledge which respond effectively to the needs of its users. This article examines the three key dimensions in the management of a portal: intellectual capital, the design of the web site, and its diffusion through marketing activities. We stress the vital role of the information professional at all the stages of the portal's development, from the definition of its objectives and its target audience to the plans for its positioning on the Internet.
