  • The appreciation of “institutional memory” in establishing the organization’s future necessitates the application of processes that seek to discover, capture and articulate the knowledge and experience available to its environment. This new approach in management, known as Knowledge Management (KM), is knowledge-centred recognizing both knowledge and people possessing it as basic institutional assets. People along with KM processes and technological tools constitute the three main parameters of a KM strategy. This presentation focuses on the third parameter and explores the possibility of implementing in academic library environment KM programmes based on ontologies. The development of a KM programme presupposes the existence of a knowledge map, an infrastructure that supports both the KM processes applied by an organization and the technological tools that enable them. This paper, not only does it investigate the way ontologies – as means of recording knowledge in a machine understandable format - can be exploited during the task of mapping the knowledge of an academic library, but it also exhibits the potential of the resultant knowledge map in supporting the whole KM effort.
