- The proposal of this article is to contribute for comprehension of the new landscape of the scientific communication in 21 century through some a few considerations about the role of institutional and discipline repositories in this context. The start point of this approach is focalized on characteristics between products (publications, digital repositories and services providers), process (electronic publishing and communication) and its correspondences in the structure of scientific literature. It follows that the cycle of online scientific production is constituted by primary sources (online scientific publications), secondary sources (institutional and discipline repositories) and tertiary sources (services providers) and the implementations and use of those three types of sources are imperative to promote the scientific development in the present time.
