  • Space technology has touched and benefited common man’s life in many ways. Remote sensing satellites continuously transfer enormous amount of data from space. This data after processing lends itself for various useful applications. The most basic of all these applications is in agriculture. Agriculture has been vastly benefited and undergone rapid changes and developments with the application of remote sensing information coupled with GPS and GIS technologies. Remote sensing data has made it possible to use natural resources effectively and economically for optimising agricultural production. The article explains the principle behind remote sensing and provides information about remote sensing data and its application to agriculture. It deals with applications related to demarcation of agricultural land, soil mapping, groundwater availability, mapping of flood affected areas and other specific tasks. Utilising three kinds of maps, viz., land use maps, soil maps and groundwater maps, specialists have created a plan to make agriculture a more systematic, scientific and profitable enterprise for the state of Karnataka.
