  • During the 1960s the Classification Research Group explored the possibility of a general "freely faceted" classification scheme, based on the theory of integrative levels. We have experimented the application of such kind of scheme to a bibliography of local culture. Its notation, designed in order to allow efficient machine retrieval of bibliographic descriptions, is especially illustrated. The system has been tested through a Web search interface written in PHP language, extracting data recorded in a MySQL database. The levelled structure allows to express relations between concepts both by simple juxtaposition of the corresponding symbols, and by more sophisticated ways, including the relation of dependence holding between phenomena at different integrative levels, like "plants" and "woods" or "mountains" and "climbing".
