- : The institutional memory of archival nature is rarely available in a systemic and articulated manner for the decision making instances of the brazilian federal universities. Even if we acknowledge that the institutional memory possesses the characteristics of, and can be understood as, strategic information, indispensable to the organizational management and planning, the recent advances of digital technologies have only been timidly directed towards the digital qualification of the information of archival nature identified with the institutional memory. Thus, the institutional memory is hardly perceived and understood as strategic information endowed with real decision making value for the management and planning activities of universities. Therefore, a questionnaire was prepared and distributed to the members of the current and the two last boards of the UFBA. The answers were put together, analyzed and discussed, showing that there is a formal, but yet insufficient, line of thinking in the UFBA determining, from the organizational point of view, the dynamic indispensable to the maintenance of the institutional memory vitality as a source of strategic information. In the Conclusion, recommendations are presented and deal with directions for a digital system of strategic memory, analyzing the administrative impact (specially in the institutional evaluation and the autonomy of the university) for the UFBA, of an active, structured and organic institutional memory.
