- The topic of certification is dealt with in the context of the global society, where markets establish their rules and national states consequently adapt themselves to deregulation, even in a very complex relation between voluntary standards and compulsory regulation. The concepts of quality, of management systems and of certification are illustrated. After a brief overview on the definitions of standards and of standardization institutes, the various types of certification are outlined: products/services, systems, personnel, with special emphasis on the I&D sector. The last section is dedicated to accreditation systems, that are the basis to validate the whole process.
