- This paper reports on the implementation of a hierarchical interface for browsing and searching the local classification system of the library of the Sigmund Freud Foundation (Vienna). This institution's online catalogue is operated by the central office of the Austrian Library Network, using the Aleph 500 library software. As this system does not provide any features for classification-based browsing and searching, the project included the integration of 25 HTML-pages into the OPAC that support a hierarchical navigation through the three levels of the classification system. A Perl program that is run on a weekly basis enables this interface to show the numbers of hits to be expected for the individual classes and sub-classes. From this display the respective titles can be retrieved by a single mouse click. As the library only catalogues the class numbers, the full record display was also enhanced in order to explicate the meaning of the respective class number; this was achieved by a javascript-based conversion of the Aleph "services" feature.
