During this pandemic time, conventional direct teaching is substituted with the online teaching practicum. With the substitutions, different challenges and benefits rose and were faced by the pre-service teachers. This qualitative multi-case study aims to investigate the challenges and benefits that the EFL pre-service teachers encountered in their online teaching practicum during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were generated from nine pre-service English teachers through an online interview. The results show that there were two major challenges found, (1) challenges related to the student’s participation during the online teaching session, and (2) the technical challenges. Participants reported that the students’ involvement during the teaching practicum was relatively low, as evident in the number of students who showed up late during synchronous classes or failed to attend the class at all. Furthermore, some students did not submit their assignments on time, preferred to turn off the camera during synchronous classes, which made it difficult for the teacher to check their online presence. Participants also reported that the major problems on technical challenges were the devices, internet connection, and signals. The participants’ strategies to overcome the challenges were by contacting their home-room teachers, providing various teaching techniques in an attempt to increase students’ participation, and changing their devices and internet data. The benefits of online teaching based on the participants’ responses were flexible, practical, time and cost-saving, unhindered by distance and time, more efficient, can motivate us to be more creative, and help to explore and to utilize digital devices.
