- This paper discusses about the use of documentary film as a historical sources, through two main issues, namely the authenticity and credibility. The use of audio-visual resources, including documentary film, actually is not a new problem and quaint in the study of history in Indonesia. The use of historical sources either in written form, recording (audio), visual motion, as well as the documentary film depends on the subject matter investigated or analysed by the researchers. What is important in the use of documentary sources, is the technical knowledge of film production process, including knowledge of the spirit of the age (zeitgeist) when the film was made. Boadly speaking, this article seeks to discuss how the position of the post-reform documentary films on the topic about poverty and social gap as a historical sources through three Leonard Retel Helmrichâs films, namely Stand Van De Zon, Stand Van De Maan, and Stand Van De Sterren.
