The First Advisor Drs. Surono, S.U. Second Advisor Elizabeth IHANR, S.S., M.Hum. This research is dealing with one of adverb in Japanese and Indonesian. This research describes the similarities and differences of adverb “totemo” and “sangat” in term of structure. Contrastive analysis provides a mean to compare and find the similarities and differences between two languages. From this research authors conludes the similarities and differences from both adverbs. The similarities of adverb “totemo” and “sangat” are: 1. Both of the adverb are use to express something that is “very” or “extremely” something. Beside that, Japanese adverb “totemo” and Indonesian adverb “sangat” included on the same section in adverb, which is adverb degree. 2. Adverb “totemo” and “sangat” always placed in the middle of sentence and modified adjectives, verbs, and another adverbs. 3. If adverb “totemo” and “sangat” omitted from sentence, it will change the information of the sentence. The differences of adverb “totemo” and “sangat” are: 1. When “totemo” is used to modify Japanese ngative, it indicates a feeling of “hard” or “cannot possibly”. 2. Indonesian adverb “sangat” always placed next to the modified word, but Japanese adverb “totemo” not always placed next to the modified word.
