  • Background: Phaleria macrocarpa is a plant that has a strong cytotoxic effect, approaching the cytotoxic effects of Doxorubicin as a chemotherapeutic drug that is used as a control. CD4+ T cells is one of the cellular immune response to cancer. Phaleria macrocarpa can increase the number of CD4+ T cells. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of Phaleria macrocarpa and chemotherapy on the CD4+ T cell count of tumor in Swiss mice with epidermoid carcinoma Methods: Experimental research laboratory to design "Randomized Post-test only control group" with 18 male Swiss mice inducted for epidermoid carcinoma with 9, 12-dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene (DMBA) and 12-o-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) topically and had tumor growht. Subject were divided into 4 groups: K as a control, P1 given Phaleria macrocarpa, P2 given Paclitaxel and Cysplatin chemotherapy and P3 were given combination chemotherapy Paclitaxel and Cysplatin also Phaleria macrocarpa. Number of CD4+ T cell tumor measured with immunohistochemistry. Differences between the four groups using Mann Whitney test. Results: The difference in the number of CD4+ T cells obtained value of P <0.05. From table Mann Whitney test group obtained P1, P2 and P3 significantly to the group K, P1 and P2 significantly to P3, and P2 to P3 significantly. Conclusion: Number of CD4+ T cells were significantly higher in Swiss mice with epidermoid carcinoma given chemotherapy and Phaleria macrocarpa.
