- Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific immunoblot analysis was used to reveal antibody responses against Epstein-Barr virus-encoded proteins in serum samples from patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and control subject. Aim: To investigate the difference of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded proteins immunopositivity in the serum sampels from patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and control subject. Methods: Observational analytic case-control. The sample was a group of 20 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and the control group consisted of 20 persons who had no history of the cancer. Epstein-Barr virus-encoded proteins immunopositivity was determined by immunoblot analysis. Result: The Mann-Whitney test for Epstein-Barr virus-encoded proteins immunopositivity count between patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma vs control group : VCA-p18 (p=0.041), VCA-p40 (p=0.035) and EA-p47/54 (p=0.009) were significant, but ZEBRA(p=0.140) , EBNA1 (p=0.540), TK(p=0.713), and DNAse (p=0.740) were not significantly different. Conclusion: Statistical analysis showed significant difference in VCA-p18, VCAp40 and EA-p47/54 between the two groups.
